Established in 1977 Prayag Mahila Vidyapeeth Degree College, is a unit of Prayag Mahila Vidyaparishad (est. 1927) one of the oldest non-profitable organizations of Prayagraj. College is affiliated to Prof. Rajendra Singh (Rajju Bhaiya) University, Prayagraj.
Prayag Mahila Vidyapeeth is not just a college but a heritage of India that holds the unforgettable history of women’s education, whose existence began with the movement against the British rule. In South Malaka area of district Allahabad (now Prayagraj) by the hands of Shri Sangam Lal Agarwal, an important signature of Prayagraj, focusing on women’s education in the interest of the nation and society, the foundation of this institution was laid in 1922 in the form of Mahila Vishwavidyalaya (a University dedicated to education of women) in contemporary India. Later, as a result of the interest and awakening of parents and students, in 1970-71, the Vidyapeeth was expanded as Mahila Mahavidyalaya in the heart of Prayagraj, Civil Lines, and Prayag Mahila Vidyapeeth Degree College came into existence, whose post of Principal was adorned by Padma Vibhushan Mahiyasi Smt. Mahadevi Verma, also a recipient of the Gyanpeeth Award. Later, Mahadevi ji had bonded this institution with her existence in such a way that both became synonymous with each other. The golden history of this college highlights its importance. The granddaughters of India’s first President Dr Rajendra Prasad studied by staying in the hostel of the college. This college also received the love of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi ji used to send students from his Sabarmati Ashram to this institution for studies.
The first Prime Minister of the country, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, adorned the post of Chancellor here. In 1994, senior advocate of Prayagraj, Pt. Chintamani Pandey, with his farsighted and mature working style, made the college proud by getting the college teachers and employees enrolled in the grant list. At present, this college is affiliated to the State University Prof. Rajendra Singh alias Rajju Bhaiya University, Prayagraj. For the all-round development of the students of the college, there is a library, a multifaceted playground, a beautiful auditorium, a miniature art gallery, a computer center and a reading room equipped with magazines from India and abroad. The examination result of 90% to 95% is a special achievement due to the teaching style of competent and permanent lecturers selected by the Higher Education Service Commission and accredited by the UGC for teaching thirteen subjects. For the convenience of the students, there is a post office, hospital, PCO, computer, Hindustani Academy Museum, Company Garden, recognized All India Dance and Music College Prayag Sangeet Samiti adjacent to the college campus, which play an important role in the personality development of the students.
